Are you experiencing weakness, numbness, tingling, and burning in your lower back and possibly radiating down one or both legs? These symptoms make up sciatica, which may stem from a number of causes. At Di Liberto Chiropractic Family & Sports Center, helping Jersey City and the general vicinity, Dr. Anthony Di Liberto assists patients who have sciatica.
Sciatica refers to tingling, pain, numbness, weakness, or burning that may affect any of the following:
- Lower back
- Left leg
- Right leg
The symptoms may be mild to severe and range from dull to shooting pain. Movement often worsens your discomfort.
This isn't a distinct disease. Sciatica is, however, a word that describes the symptoms that affect your sciatic nerve and stem from an issue with this nerve. Our Jersey City, NJ, chiropractor would like you to know that the sciatic nerve system is the longest in the body, which is why sciatica pain can be such a serious problem.
You may only have sciatica temporarily, while other people experience it for the course of their life. It depends on if the cause is correctable. In most cases, symptoms are manageable with chiropractic care.
For instance, a pregnant woman may have sciatica pain and other symptoms as the developing baby places pressure on the sciatic nerve or the hormonal changes induce it in the first trimester. These may go away after delivery.
Sciatica can stem from uncontrolled diabetes. Insulin naturally helps your body break down sugar. When your body doesn't do this efficiently, the high blood sugar levels can trigger a number of problems. For one, you could develop nerve damage. It's possible for that damage to affect the sciatic nerve and lead to sciatica pain and other symptoms.
Disc herniation is a more common cause. With this particular condition, you have a tear in the lining of a spinal disc, which allows the contents of the disc to seep out. As it does, it can compress nerve roots, including the sciatic nerve.
Our practitioner may recommend you receive spinal adjustments to ease pressure on the nerves and enhance circulation. Therapeutic exercise is often helpful when trying to heal a herniated disc and ease pressure on the sciatic nerve.
If you have sciatica pain and other symptoms, our practitioner may recommend you receive spinal decompression to allow a disc to heal.
